Bring your vaccine history, your travel dates and destinations, your current medication list, and details of any health conditions.

What should I bring?

Usually no. Travel vaccines are not covered by Medicare. Some private health funds may help. We can give you a receipt to claim.

Does Medicare cover travel vaccines?

Yes. Call ahead to book and let us know where you are travelling. We will be ready for you.

How early should I come in?

At least 4 to 6 weeks before you leave. Earlier is better for vaccines that need more than one dose.

What to Pack in Your Travel Health Kit

Medical care overseas can be very expensive. Always get travel insurance that covers health costs.

Also carry a summary of your health history, your medications, and an emergency contact number. Keep these somewhere easy to find.

Travel Insurance: Don't Skip It

This is the most common illness travellers get. It usually comes from eating or drinking something contaminated.

Wash your hands often. Be careful with street food and tap water. Carry oral rehydration salts just in case. Ask us what to include in your travel kit.

Traveller's Diarrhoea: Very Common, Very Avoidable

Malaria is spread by mosquitoes. It is still a risk in parts of Africa, Asia, and South America. There is no vaccine that fully protects you.

The best approach is to take antimalarial tablets, use insect repellent, wear long sleeves, and sleep under a treated net. Our pharmacists can help you choose the right tablets for your trip.

Malaria: No Vaccine, But Preventable

Vaccines are just one part of staying healthy abroad. Here are a few other things to keep in mind:

Other Health Tips for Travellers

Before any overseas trip, check that your regular vaccines are current. These include:

  • Flu — get it every year before you travel
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) — measles outbreaks still occur in many countries
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Whooping Cough
  • COVID-19 — check what your destination requires
  • Hepatitis B — important if you might need medical care abroad

Are Your Routine Vaccines Up to Date?

Your vaccine needs depend on where you are going and what you plan to do. Here are the most common ones for Australians travelling abroad:

Hepatitis A Spreads through food and water. Recommended for travel to most countries outside Western Europe, North America, and Australia.

Typhoid Common in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa. Spread through contaminated food and water.

Rabies Worth considering if you plan to spend time outdoors or in rural areas in Asia or Africa.

Yellow Fever Some countries in Africa and South America require proof of this vaccine before you enter. A certificate may be checked at the border.

Japanese Encephalitis Recommended if you are spending a lot of time in rural parts of Asia. Risk is higher during the wet season.
Meningococcal Required for pilgrims visiting Saudi Arabia. Also recommended for travel to sub-Saharan Africa.

Key Travel Vaccines to Consider

Australia is largely free of many serious diseases. But other countries are not. When you travel, your body may meet germs it has never seen before.

Some of these diseases are life-threatening. Many are easy to prevent with a vaccine. A quick visit to our pharmacy before you leave could save your trip — and your health.

Tip: Book your travel health visit at least 4 to 6 weeks before you fly. Some vaccines need more than one dose. Others take a few weeks to work.

Why Vaccines Matter Before You Travel

Are you planning a trip abroad from Canberra? Travel is exciting. But it also comes with health risks. The good news is that most of these risks are preventable.

Getting the right vaccines before you leave is one of the best things you can do. At Pharmacy Alliance Woden, we make it simple. Our pharmacists give you clear, personalised advice — all in one visit.
